The 2012 Lakota Summer Jazz Clinic

The Lakota Summer Jazz Clinic is a summer jazz experience catered to the needs of the rising stars of jazz! All students who are interested in jazz and will be in grades 7-9 next year are encouraged to participate. This musical experience will not only share information about jazz styles and improvisation, but can give each student an opportunity to develop self-confidence and gain skills that are both personally valuable and meaningful. Rising seventh grade students should have at least six months worth of experience on their instruments in order to feel comfortable with the music that will be played. Registration forms are due by Friday, May 25th if you would like a t-shirt or you may register at the door on June 11th as well. Also, for the second year in a row students may audition for the Advanced Jazz Band. The Advanced Jazz Band is designed to offer more developed musicians the opportunity to work on more difficult literature in an ensemble setting. Auditions for the Advanced Jazz Band will be held on Wednesday, June 6th. (See the registration form for audition information.)

Dear Jazz Parents and Students,

Welcome to the new school year and welcome (or welcome back) to Lakota West Jazz Bands! Your students are off to a great start this year! Please continue to check this web page for updates and announcements about jazz this year. Please also note that jazz band handbooks, agreement forms, and emergency medical authorization forms are available on this website. Information regarding the method book needed for class for main campus students can be found in the handbook under Class Materials.

As always, we are grateful for the parental support and involvement students experience in Lakota West Bands. This year in particular, we are in need of a chair person for the Jazz Swing Dance in December. If you are interested in helping out with a leadership role for this outstanding event, please contact a jazz band teacher or Mr. Tim Sant, Lakota West Upbeat Club President at president@lakotawestbands.org.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns throughout the year. We are confident that we will work together to continue the tradition of great jazz at Lakota West and to help your student have a successful year in jazz band!

Sincerely,

Mr. Todd Hartman, Mr. Tom Racic, and Mr. David Thomas

Lakota West Jazz – A Proud Tradition

As the Lakota West band program has enjoyed growth, the jazz program has grown as well. The Lakota West Jazz program started as one jazz band taught after school, and has grown to five high school jazz big bands, which each meet daily during the school day. The bands are under the direction of Mr. Todd Hartman, Mr. David Thomas, Mr. Tom Racic.

Lakota Jazz Bands have hosted jazz greats such as Rick Van Matre, Phil DeGreg, Jim Rupp, Scott Belck, Hal Melia, Drews Mitchell, Jason Webb, Steve Whipple, Bill Burns, Rusty Burge, Jerry Robinson, J.C. Heisler, Joe Jahnigen, Ron Jones, and Karl Kerfoot as guest performers/clinicians.

The Lakota West High School Jazz Ensemble has been selected to perform at the prestigious University of North Texas Jazz Festival and the OMEA State Professional Conference. The West Jazz Ensemble earned a superior rating at the OMEA State Jazz Festival. The ensemble also participated in a clinic with Mr. Rick VanMatre (Director of Jazz Studies/Jazz Ensemble Conductor the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) at the OMEA Professional Conference.

Lakota West jazz students are consistently selected to perform with the OMEA All-State High School Jazz Ensemble and the OMEA District XIII Honor Jazz Ensemble.

Other performance venues for Lakota Jazz Bands have included the Ohio State University Jazz Festival, the Southwest Ohio Jazz Festival at Miami University, the Beavercreek High School Jazz Festival, and the Lebanon High School Jazz Festival.
