The 19th Annual JAZZ ‘n CAKES Pancake Breakfast is Saturday, April 30. Please pick up tickets at the April 11 Composer Concert, and please sell the tickets to family and friends by April 30! This is our second biggest fundraiser, and is the reason Lakota West Upbeat Club can do things like help bring in Sam Hazo to work with your students, provide scholarships, and similar activities.
PLEASE HELP BY:
- Selling Tickets: Every band student is asked to sell 5 – $6 tickets to the Jazz ‘n Cakes pancake breakfast. Tickets will be distributed at the April 11 Composer Concert and are available before, after, and between bands. To simplify transactions for you, you may pay for your tickets at pick-up, reimbursing yourself when you sell them. We will be able to process credit cards, cash, and checks at ticket pick-up.
- Volunteering to help at the event: Volunteer opportunities are available to help with setup on Friday, April 29 or on Saturday, April 30 in the kitchen, dining room, and to help on market street, or for Jazz N Cake ticket sales at the door, raffle ticket sales, or Mike’s Car Wash book sales. CLICK HERE to sign up to volunteer.
- Encouraging your student to volunteer at the Jazz ‘nCakes breakfast or during set-up the evening before: Student sign-ups to host/hostess, act as servers and bussers, etc. will be posted in the band rooms at the freshman and main campus building starting April 14.
- Telling your friends and neighbors about Jazz ‘n Cakes and encouraging them to come!

TryBand is a great hands-on opportunity for elementary school students, especially 6th graders, to get to hear, hold, and learn about different instruments. Band directors, music store representatives, information on the Lakota West Band program, directors, and ensemble and full band performances by Lakota West Symphonic Winds will be featured. TryBand is April 16 at the Lakota West Freshman School from 9:30am until noon. Please help by:
- Sharing the news about TryBand with your friends and neighbors! This is a great opportunity to learn about different instruments and how they sound.
- Signing up to volunteer at TryBand. CLICK HERE to sign up. We still need 4 adult volunteers to help direct attendees and answer questions as band parents.
Announcing the new application process for the Bill Weatherwax Memorial Scholarship:
Bill Weatherwax was a band dad who loved being a part of the Lakota West band programs. Bill started by volunteering for Solo & Ensemble and later joined the Pit Crew. He enjoyed the experience so much that he added band camp, trips, and he was gearing up to chair his favorite, Jazz ‘N Cakes. His gentle and kind spirit was evident in everything he did and he was always asking how he could help his fellow band parents whether that was carrying a heavy bag, loading another instrument, or helping another chaperone. It is in remembrance of that spirit of volunteerism and cheerful service that we honor his memory with this scholarship to a deserving senior.
The Bill Weatherwax Memorial Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from a concert band who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and cheerful service. This is a student who shows up to help without being asked, who is there early to set up, pitches in when they see a need, does the dirty jobs no one else wants, gets others to help, stays late to clean up, and who can always be counted on. S/he does this repeatedly and cheerfully and often when no one is looking.
All concert band seniors are invited to apply for the Bill Weatherwax Memorial Scholarship. CLICK HERE for the application. Applications must be submitted to president@lakotawestbands.org or deposited in the envelope on the Main Campus band room board by Friday, April 22, 2016. The scholarship will be awarded at the band awards program in May.
